Kuniko had the entire day off yesterday, so she spent most of it in the kitchen cooking up a bunch of delicious food for us to enjoy for our Christmas dinner. The menu was full of our favorites – starting with a mushroom and walnut pate with french bread, a pumpkin, ham and onion salad, and some bowtie pasta with a carbonara sauce. The main course was pieces of steak simmered in a Syrah wine sauce – tender and flavorful. It was a serious dinner, so we brought out a serious wine, a 2006 Primitivo di Manduria ‘Sessantanni’, which comes in a bottle so heavy you almost need two hands to pour.
For dessert we had a Japanese Christmas cake, this one made of chocolate and with enough calories to power a small city for a day. It was served ice cold and really matched up well with the wine. Yum.
So after all that eating we’ve pretty much cleared out the fridge, so tonight we’ll have dinner at the Indian restaurant in town to try to avoid buying more groceries before our trip. I’ve got to give my stomach a rest – lots of food yesterday and today!
