Day Off Shopping, Japanese Reminder

Yesterday Kuniko and I both had a midweek day off, so we slept in and headed into Kobe for some shopping. We did a big circle from her school in Motomachi to southern Sannomiya and back, and on the way picked up some new plates for entertaining, new alcohol for entertaining, and some new foods for entertaining. We’ve got a party coming up, and we want to get ready.

During our stop at Kaldi Coffee Farms, an import food store in Motomachi, I was lucky enough to find a bottle of bleu cheese dressing – something that hasn’t really caught on here. Can’t wait to try it on a salad in the near future and see if it is all I remember it to be.

I received some friendly encouragement from my old friend Nozaki sensei reminding me that recently I haven’t posted anything in Japanese, so I’ve got to get back in the habit. Posting in a foreign language is a great way to keep up your skills – I often recommend it to my students. So expect to see more Japanese posts in the near future.

That’s Entertainment

It was a pretty big weekend for us. Kuniko had a birthday on Friday, so we met up after work and went over to Sigassiga. They did a great job with dinner, and we had a nice bottle of wine with it (a 2003 Spenker Zinfandel). It was good to get out and relax after work, and I think it was a memorable birthday dinner.

Saturday night Yoshi and his family came over, and we had a good evening catching up, drinking plenty of wine, and eating (probably too much) food. I had barbecued some chicken, served it with risotto that Kuniko made, and we also had plenty of salad and grilled veggies to go with it. Akira kept busy with his Nintendo DS, and in contrast, Kuniko gave hers up for the evening. We talked a lot about traveling, and it is possible that we could take a trip together in the future. We partied late into the night, and I was surprised to see five empty wine bottles on the counter the next morning.

Today a pregnant Jimi came over with her husband and son, and we spent the day trying to talk to the little guy. He was pretty shy through most of the visit, and I think I scared him quite a bit. We spent a pretty relaxing day eating tacos, talking about their family size growing, and catching up.

We were busy all weekend, but it was good to see everyone and have fun at home. I’m not sure what is happening next week – we’ve got a bit of a break in our schedule, so it may be a chance to invite someone else over, or it may be a chance to rest up on our own.
