Where Curling is Hot

Here in Japan I’ve seen an inordinate amount of TV coverage about curling. From what I understand the Japanese women’s team did better than expected four years ago at the last winter Olympics, and they are fairly good looking, so that means a media blitz. Every night they show at least highlights and sometimes a full match, and every morning a preview of the upcoming match, and more highlights.

I’m sure plenty has been said about curling over the years so I’ll just say that it seems like a sport that you could play with a beer in your hand, and therefore loses some of that Olympiad glow for me.

These days we are trying to figure out what our travel plans are for this year, and we still haven’t settled on something. The problem is that we have tons of options, and too many places we want to go. I should know in the next week or so what my holidays will be from work, and hopefully they will match up closely with what I requested. We are aiming for two major trips and at least one minor trip in 2010. When we finally make a decision I’ll get it posted up here.

Some of my students from work invited me out for yakitori and beer next Monday after work – definitely a good sign in teacher/student relationship developments. I have been walking by this delicious-looking yakitori on my way home every night, and it turns out that it is the one they want to take me to, so I’ll finally get a chance to try it out. Can’t wait…
