Before we left for our trip we asked the neighbor down the way, Yamaji-san, to water our plants out front of our house while we were gone. She did a great job taking care of the greenery during the heat wave – otherwise our front yard would have been a desert wasteland when we got back.
She told us a story before we left about her son Yuki. He has been going to college and kind of wondering what to study, but recently he made a big decision to quit college in Japan, and instead head to Italy to try to study cooking there. Yamaji-san asked us for any advice about Italy, and so Kuniko put together a letter for her and Yuki with some information that might help out.
Cut to yesterday, and it Yamaji-san told me that Yuki has picked out a cooking school in Florence, and will study cooking part time and Italian language part time. Talk about a change in majors – it should be a good chance to learn overseas. Italian restaurants are usually pretty upscale around Kobe, and there are a lot of chefs that study overseas and come back to open a restaurant. Let’s hope this happens with Yuki – or at least that he invites us over to show off his technique sometime.
Today after work I’m joining some students for a drinking party. The email subject that they used while organizing the party was “Summer Seminar” which is code for “Drinking with Bryan”. I’m looking forward to catching up with them and talking about what they’ve been up to. The amount of party members has increased a little, so it will be a little more lively, I think.
