When I first started reading this book I met one of the main characters and thought that I probably wouldn’t finish this book. Luckily, I kept on reading, and really enjoyed the experience.
I am not a big fan of books with eccentric characters that behave ridiculously. It seems like there are quite a few modern novels that have people like this – for some reason it just emphasizes to me that I am reading fiction and makes it harder to get into the story.
But this book was fun – and I really enjoyed the experience of seeing Italy from the protagonist’s point of view. Obviously the author loves the country, and seems to enjoy pointing out its quirks as well as its highlights.
I like reading stories written with intelligence, that don’t dumb things down and leave some things for the reader to figure out. Plenty of great storytelling in this one – and it had me guessing until the end.
Next I am reading The River of Doubt by Candace Millard.
