Books: A Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett

One of my current favorite authors continuing a great series – nice! This book continues the mystery style in a fantastic and dangerous world. The main characters and their interaction is entertaining as usual, and especially Ana’s language and communication style set up a lot of great scenes.

This new place they are investigating is quite different from the last two books, but it works well. Sort of Sherlock Holmes meets Romeo & Juliet meets the American beef cultivation industry. Weird but it works.

In the previous book in this series things sped up quite a bit and to me it felt like the author was setting up to finish the series as a trilogy. But in this book he steps back a little and slows things down which brings about a bad news/good news situation. The bad news is that this slower pace is less exciting and it seems like we’re still quite far from revealing some mysteries, but the good news is that it seems that the series will continue, and we can get more of these characters.

The really great stuff happens in a haunted forest, with a scene at the end that really creeps out the reader. I hope that future books go this direction more often. The author hints in the afterword that he was struggling with his editors and ended up starting this book over – I hope that the next one goes easier for him.

Next I am reading The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea by Yukio Mishima.
