This book is the second in a series – I read the first a while back and really loved it. This one was even better, and I can’t wait to read more.
Sort of like Sherlock Holmes in a poisonous, organic and moldy fantasy regime, this series offers a lot of new ideas and has a unique vibe. Once again the world building here is superb – it flows naturally and we discover things without it feeling like an information dump.
What I really liked were the characters. The second time around with Ana and Din we learn more about their backgrounds (secret and otherwise) and watch them start to understand each other better. The characters in this book are genuinely likable and people that you would want to spend time with yourself, despite the harrowing situations that they find themselves in.
Another strong point is the book is written in a way that treats the reader as an intelligent adult and there isn’t much in the way of simplifying or making caricatures of the people living in this world.
The ending of this one was great – I know that it is not the final book in the series, but it gave us enough information to feel satisfied but still ready to learn more.
