I really like “coming of age” books and I picked up this one without knowing that that is what it was. Just like the title hints, there are ominous undercurrents throughout the book. Are there really ghosts? The book reads a little like a Stephen King novel so I was always wondering about the supernatural.
This was my first book by this author, and his writing style was extremely clear and easy to read. If anything it might have been too straightforward. But he really nails what it was like to grow up as a boy in the 1970s, and maybe that’s why it was so easy to read.
The chapters were extremely short here, I guess as a stylistic decision to feel like the days of this particular summer were slipping by. Sometimes the short chapters left me wondering what the point was as I naturally reflected at the breaks. I’d have liked to read longer sections, but I guess I’ll look into his other books and see what they are like.
I enjoyed the book, and hopefully I can find some more of his works in the library.
Next I am finishing up a re-read of Stephen King’s The Stand, and then we’ll see what the library has for me next.
